Where it All Started

Where it All Started

Let me start by introducing myself, my name is Peyton (I know, shocking! I’m not Kay or Leo) and I’m the owner of Leo & Kay Boutique. A boutique I named after my Great Grandparents, Leon & Kay. I don’t want to share too much because you are about to read how it all happened, how I grew my love for fashion over the years of my life and inevitably went on to open my boutique.

I think my love of fashion came at a very young age. I was the kid in her 1st-grade school picture with the fake hair clip in ponytail, fur boots, and a matching fur vest from Justice. I never cared that I was always the most overdressed everywhere I went because the way I dress and the clothes I wear give me so much confidence.

Fast forward to high school when I moved to a new school. A small town, super tiny, country school where all they wear are jeans, boots, and a T-shirt. My first day was not the best! I felt like I did not belong, especially after a girl told me that “most people here don’t wear makeup.” I got in the car they day and cried and said I was never going back! After lots of persuasion from my mom, I went back the next day dressed up in a cute outfit with a new amount of confidence because this is just the way I am and dressing up makes me feel the most confident. It took a while but people soon understood that I always dress that way.

My sophomore year I started kind of getting into modeling. I did KCFW for multiple seasons and that just grew my love for fashion even more. Junior year I did a project for my English class about fashion where I researched all about the industry, different jobs, designers and their stories and so much more, but after that project, I remember watching so many documentaries and YouTube videos by British vogue and vlogs of people in the industry and their lives in NYC. I wanted to be in it all so bad! I wanted to be a stylist for celebrities, a buyer or trend forecaster for big companies, work at Vogue Magazine and just attend all of the big designer's fashion shows. I was so in love with fashion then.

At the beginning of my senior year, as you might know, I started Leo & Kay. I never really had a real job before that, I just dove in head first. It started all online while I was in school. Then I got the opportunity to open the storefront! I took another leap of faith and jumped right into it.

Owning a business has come with many challenges and stresses that I’ve had to overcome but at the end of the day, this is what God has called me to do at this point in my life. I am so thankful for this opportunity and the amazing and empowering women I have met along the way.

I’m so thankful for you all!
